Charlie!
The more I distance myself from our occupation by reason of retirement, the more I see (I hope from a less parochial and less emotional view) just how apt the intimation of your quotation really is, not only as to pomposity but also it suggests its more "evil" and much less humorous cohort, arrogance. Even the most unassuming I know amongst us are still more pompous than we ought to be, especially with one another, never mind staffs, students and laymen. Indeed, we shouldn't be pompous at all. It could be a great theme for a future academy meeting, i.e., the ridding of pomposity in academic speech and writing! Maybe a new Anti-pomposity track might be established?
Charlie, it's a great quote for all of us pompous turkeys on the eve of Turkey Day!
It's neat to see you're still nurturing our list - I read it with great (well, sometimes great) interest. I hope all hands appreciate your efforts.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Cybercolleagues!
The sun is rising here in New York metro, and I'm reading the Times of
London review of the new Harry Potter movie. One sentence seemed like
something that we might use in our work:
"Where are the anti-pomposity police when we need them?"

Just like where we work, the Hogswart School is filled with
hocus pocus.
