Hey, folks - hope this doesn't offend anybody (and if it does, I
apologize); I just thought some of you out there might find this
    interesting...

I have permission from Dr. Paulette Dale to distribute an excerpt from her
new book, "Did You Say Something, Susan?: How Any Woman Can Gain Confidence
With Assertive Communication." Dr. Dale offers sound, practical advice for
being assertive without being aggressive, and getting what you want while
    avoiding the dreaded "B" word.

The excerpt I am distributing includes a self-assessment test to help you
analyze your ability to communicate assertively in a variety of situations.
Do you look at the floor or fold your arms when speaking to others? Do you
hesitate to defend yourself? Do you tend to explain too much? Do you make
promises you later regret? This excerpt will help you examine these
behaviors, target areas for change and take more control of your
    communication and your life.

To get the excerpt from "Did You Say Something, Susan?" (Carol Publishing
Group), please send mailto:jhart@tenagra.com with the subject line, "Send
Susan" and I'll reply with a text file. Enjoy!

Does anyone know if this "offer" is educationally legitimate? will
responding put one in danger of e-mail junk mail hell? I'm very leery of
offers such as this from .com addresses.

It would seem reasonable that if this is a legitimate educational offer, then
Jeremy should be willing to supply Dr. Paulette Dale's educational credentials
(i.e. source of doctorate) and current affiliation.

Ms. Reger - I assure that you're in *no* danger at all; if you request a
copy of the excerpt, I'll send you that and only that, and your address
won't end up on any marketing lists of any kind. I'm just sending out the
excerpt to those folks who are interested in receiving it - I'm not sure
whether or not that makes it educationally legitimate, per se, but I'm
definitely not doing this for illegitimate purposes.

    Take care,

    Rhonda -
for what it's worth, I asked for and got the [long] excerpt. I
looked at some of the stuff in there, and I think it's interesting for the
non-assertive. Perhaps that may be mostly women; I concluded my wife
certainly didn't need it. In our house, (not necessarily elsewhere)
perhaps I'm the one in need of it? :-)

Anyhow, sometimes we need to be willing to take a risk with
something that seems interesting to us. If we're assertive enough. we
certainly can take care of junk mail - just as we do at home. If we don't
    want it, dump it!

Someone else inquired about source of doctorate - I'm not
particularly concerned with credentials; what counts is whether material
is interesting, not where someone earned their doctorate (or whether it
might have been honorary). Some are even conferred with position; some
religious denomations call their preachers and/or their organists Dr.
whether one was ever awarded or not.

When I was earning my doctorate, at BU students were always
calling me Professor even though I was an instructor; during the last year
when I taught at UNH both students and secretaries insisted on conferring
the doctorate although not then earned. I gave up and let them say what
    they wished.

    Who really cares?

I'd be glad to - Dr. Dale is a Fulbright Scholar, a widely-published author
(I believe this is at least her sixth book), and has been a professor of
Speech Communication at Miami Dade Community College for about 23 years, in
addition to doing a number of lectures and workshops worldwide. However, I
must admit I don't know where she received her doctorate, but I'll pass
this on to her via e-mail, and hopefully she'll answer that one herself.

    Hope that helps - thanks,

    Jeremy
Don't be put off by some of the "precious" and suspicious people who have
responded to you. I refuse to prejudge but I am prepared to judge the
    outcome before condemning.

I'm not put off by Jeremy's offer: I'm intrigued and interested. But
leery. On an Academy of Management listserv, I think it is fair to expect
rigor and professional exchanges, not commercial offers. It wasn't clear
to me which described Jeremy's offer. So, if you thought I was flaming
Jeremy, I was not clear. (maybe I need this book?) I simply wanted
    assurances, which I subsequently got.

I've been burned on the internet too many times. At home, we maintain 2
e-mail accounts. One for commerce and one personal. We've learned the
hard way to only respond to commercial offers from the commercial acct. It
fills up daily with junk mail that we simply delete periodically. I used
to be of the camp that everyone should be free to post anything anywhere on
listservs, but now that 100+ messages greet me on some mornings, I'm less
    sanguine.

I tend to agree with Bruce that this is a bit suspicious but I must be very
ignorant. I can't see any relevance in the source of doctorate and current
affiliation with the value of the information. Am I missing something here?
Does this have any relevance to truth, accuracy or validity?

If she has some affiliation with a "well-respected" institution should I be
more willing to accept it? Should I automatically suspect it if she
received her doctorate from a "lesser" institution or if she chooses to
    affiliate with some nonacademic organization?

    Naively perhaps, Doug
