  • 1.  Symposium on gender/ mgt education

    Posted 12-21-1998 16:37
I am considering putting together a symposium on gender and management education.

I have done a qualitative study of students in an elite business school, 47 participants over three years, in depth interviews, men, women, internationals, & ethnically diverse. I am now doing a follow up w/ the group who are approx. five years out of B-School. I am looking at classroom norms & students' beliefs about what constitutes success in the classroom which is case method & participatory. My focus in on communication and identity. Does anyone have any interest in joining me, even though the date is late?

    Thanks.

I want to put together a Symposium proposal for the Mgmt Ed & Devel Division. What this takes is for several people with contingent, overlapping interests, or perhaps opposing views to write paper abstracts around a particular theme, and then someone has to write an overview paper of about three pages describing why this should be a Symposium, of whom it should be of interest, etc. There has been quite a bit in the pop press recently about women and MBA programs - being underrepresented, dropping out, etc. as well as about women managers and the challenges they continue to face. So I think the issue is topical.

My study included men and women. Briefly, I see a classroom culture wh is male and advocacy oriented. Some women like this, some don't. And, many of the men in my study didn't particularly like it either. The classroom I studied was case method based. Women constituted less than 30% of the class. The environment was competitive bec. of the grading system. "Air time" was very limited bec. of the large number in the classroom. I have written one paper called, "Women in an elite business school classroom: GI Janes?" I would do a variation on this where I included and compared male responses, and also added some perspective I have gotten by doing a follow on study w/ these students who are, on average, five years out.

I need to know whether you could produce a paper on this topic, and an abstract by early Jan so we could meet the submission date.

Thanks for your interest. If you want to discuss more, probably the best is to talk by phone. 212-636-6581. I am here today till about 8PM and tomorrow, maybe some on Thursday. Also will be here all next week. Or you can try me at home, 212-334-5809.

Sharon, would you have any interest in the symposium having a discussion of
whether these gender differences also exist in the electronic MBA
classroom? Some of my initial work suggests that they may not. Ben
