    Day Workshop: Call for participation and short papers

    Theme: Components of Instruction: An Approach to Instructional Design
    --------------------------------------------------------------------

    http://zeus.gmd.de/ifets/merrill_workshop.html

    Date: Friday 19 March 1999
    Organised by: International Forum of Educational Technology & Society (IFETS)
    Hosted by: German National Research Center for Information Technology
    Venue: GMD, Schloss Birlinghoven, D-53754 Sankt Augustin, Bonn, Germany
    Participation: FREE (Advance registration is necessary due to limited number of
    places. Registration will be done on first come first serve basis.)
    Language: English

    * Background
    For the past three decades Prof. M. David Merrill has been doing research on
    components of instruction. His 'Component Display Theory' is well known and
    deals with strategy components. His recent work has concerned 'Knowledge Objects'
    or content components. He is currently preparing a book titled "Components of
    Instruction: An Approach to Instructional Design" which brings together his
    earlier work with his recent work on knowledge analysis.

    Components of instruction provides a way to more precisely analyze subject matter
    content and more precisely design instructional strategies to present this
    material. Prof. Merrill is committed to a scientific approach to instruction and
    to a technology of instructional design supported by empirically founded
    principles of instruction.

    More details about Prof. Merrill's work are available at:
    http://www.id2.usu.edu/

    * Purpose
    The purpose of the workshop is twofold. First, it would provide an opportunity to
    hear Prof. Merrill and obtain a prepublication insight of this approach to
    instructional design. Second, there would be chance for those who have used
    Prof. Merrill's theories in their own research or have elaborated on them, to
    present their work and get it discussed with Prof. Merrill and others interested/
    working in similar research areas.

    * Call for short papers
    Shorts papers are invited which deal with the research, implementation and/or
    elaboration of 'Component Display Theory', 'Elaboration Theory' or 'Instructional
    Transaction Theory' as given by Prof. Merrill. The papers should be no more than
    3000 words and should exhibit unpublished original research/implementation work.
    The papers should be in electronic form preferably in Word, Adobe PDF, html or
    ASCII format.

    Deadline for short paper submission: Friday 12 March 99

    The papers presented at the workshop would be published in a special issue of the\
    'Educational Technology & Society' (ISSN 1436-4522) peer-reviewed journal, guest
    edited by Prof. Merrill.

    * Programme
    The workshop will run all day long starting with presentation of Prof. Merrill about
    his latest research on Knowledge Objects or content components. Then participants
    will present their papers and discuss them with Prof. Merrill and other participants.

    * Participation
    Participation in the workshop is free, but the participants would have to bear
    expenses of their travel and lodging/boarding (if required). Organisers can provide
    information about places to stay and help in booking them if desired.

    Workshop booking and short paper submission details are available at:
