Hi folks -
By now you almost surely have the good news about the deadline extension.
(We have repeated it below for anyone whose mailbox may be as full as
mine.) However, we want to underline one logical implication:
NOW there is NO excuse for not getting that terrific symposium proposal or
paper submitted!
(Although, as noted further below, it would be helpful to many program
chairs if you could still get your paper in by this Friday, MED is in good
shape in terms of processing and we'd love to have a full snail-mail
mailbox next Tuesday. (and, shush, don't tell anyone, but at MED we'd
rather have a great submission arrive next Tuesday rather than a very good
one arrive this Friday. ... but don't tell anyone.)
However, DO get that electronic submission-registration number as soon as
you can in case the web site gets overloaded again.
Warm regards,
Jim
(Jim Stoner)

ELECTRONIC SUBMISSION FOR CHICAGO '99 The Electronic Submission
service is open for all submissions (Paper, Symposium and PDW). The
Paper/Symposium DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED to Monday, January, 11,
1999 at 7pm EST (January 12th 1999 for receipt of hardcopy), due to
increased web traffic. The submission site is closed temporarily for
service and will re-open at Noon EST tomorrow (Wednesday,
Jan. 6, 1999)
===================================================================
But, please submit by Friday or as soon as possible. Many of us
(program chairs) have organized special arrangements and extra help to
process our submissions and get them out to reviewers this weekend.
Besides, if everyone waits until Sunday or Monday to submit their
papers/symposia we may have another bottleneck and computer crash.
Hopefully, by extending the deadline to Monday people who cannot
enter their submissions by Friday will be able to do so over the
weekend.

My favorite quote for January comes, I believe, from Mahatma Gandhi.
(However, I may not have it precisely correct or may have mis-attributed
it; so, I'd be delighted to make any appropriate corrections):
"To believe that what has never been done can never be done is to deny the
fundamental dignity of mankind."
