In response to Larry's question:
My friend and colleague Daniel Villa has done work on Bilinqual
education. He also did a sessionat the International Academy of Business
Disciplines Meeting in El Paso-Juzrez last October. He can be reached at
Dvilla@nmsu.edu As I understand the issue, we teach Castillian Spanish in US
education which in effect marginalizes a whole variety of other Spanish
languages (e.g. Mexican, Latin American, Puerto Rican, etc.). There are
many nuances in each version, and which version becomes taught is a power
issue with much resistance. We live on the border between New Mexico and
Mexico and have yet another version.
I hope this is helpful.
