Measuring EQ

    Members of the list--

I have a colleague in India who is working on operationalizing the
construct of emotional intelligence and developing an instrument to
measure it. Do you know of anyone who has done work on that? Have any
    ideas about it?

    My apologies for cross-postings.

    Ruth,
Goleman's second book on the subject "Working with Emotional
Intelligence" is full of useful items that can be worked into an
instrument. Especially examine Chapter 2, Table 1 and Chapter 10,
Table 2. Also, each chapter has a section that list items on "people with
this competence." Be aware that he probably either has one or is working
on one, since he cofounded a Consortium for Research on Emotional
    Intelligence. Good luck!

Ruth asked the question but others may also find the information below
    helpful.

BAck in 1996 my company participated in research to agtehr data for an
instrument develoiped by Ruven Bar-On. Reuven was at one time in theUS and
knows DAn Goelman. He moved to Israel and continuyed hos work on the EQ-i
The Emotional Quotient Inventory. After a couple of years pof data
collection the EQ-i was made availabe for use by consumers. The contact
fiorm I know of is Multi-Health Systems and they are located in Toronto and
North Tonawanda, New York. A contact number for the US is 1 800 456 3003.
I called to verify the number. I have not used the inventory in my practice
but collected data for the database and studies that were being conducted.
I believe theinstrument and manual are available for purchase. You can
contact the firm through the number listed in here.

    Ruth,

I suggest you check out the EI consortium web page at
    (http://www.eiconsortium.org/)

On this web site there is a list of tools used to meaure EI and all the
consortium members are listed including an e-mail address to conact
them. I have met most of them and they are all very nice and likely
    would help out.

    Good Luck!

Some of you may already have a partial measure of EQ, self-awareness in your current data if you are using a 360 feedback instrument. A number of researchers including myself have been doing research on this aspect of EQ by examining self vs. others perceptions of managerial behavior. In one study, lack of self-awareness was associated with managerial derailment. In another study examining self-awareness in three cultures, the appropriate measure of it appears to depend on the what managerial behaviors are most valued in the culture. In addition, the relationship between self-awareness and managerial effectiveness appears to be non-linear. If you are interested in either or both studies, please send me you postal address and I will send you them to you.

    Hello Frank,

For some time, I have been reading  most of the messages you post to this listserv and have found the information very helpful.  My primary focus in both teaching and consulting work  is in the areas of leadership development and performance improvement technologies.  I am teaching a course, Evaluating Performance Improvement Interventions, in a new program  for the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) at two local colleges.  I have used numerous 360 feedback instruments over the years, so I am interested in the studies you offered in your  Jan 19 "RE: Measuring EQ "  message.   Thanking you in advance.
