Development Graduate Assistants for its Office of Career Services and
Preprofessional Advising, minority candidates are encouraged to apply.
The MIT Office of Career Services and Preprofessional Advising, OCSPA offers
Graduate Assisitantships/Internships/Practica sites for individuals who are
interested in gaining experience in the field of career counseling. A
commitment of two semesters is required, so that the Graduate
Assistant/Intern can participate in, contribute to and benefit from a full
cycle of OCSPA activities.
The Office of Career Services and Preprofessional Advising (OCSPA) helps
students learn to make informed decisions about career goals and find
opportunities related to their professional objectives. Students are
encouraged to begin their career education early, including a visit to OCSPA
during freshman year or the first year of graduate school, to learn what
career resources are available.
Our philosophy is that career development is an ongoing process that
includes: self-assessment, competency development research into career
options, experiential learning and preparation for the job search or for the
graduate/professional school application process.
The Career Development Graduate Assistants/Interns will assist students in
learning about:
o the relationship between what they are doing at MIT and life after graduation
o exploring career options in relation to choice of major
o understanding the competencies required beyond their technical knowledge
to succeed in the competitive global marketplace, and contribute to civilization
o networking, informational interviewing, mentoring, internships, summer
jobs and other opportunities to gain experience in fields of interest
o applying to medical, law or other graduate/professional school
o study abroad
o writing a resume and conducting interviews
o finding employment after graduation
RESPONSIBILITIES: include, but are not limited to, working under doctoral
supervision in a team-based environment to provide individual and group
career development counseling on a comprehensive set career development
issues for with an emphasis on an assigned school, and first year students,
both undergraduates and graduate students; and to participate in the
development and delivery of departmental and ODSUE initiatives. Graduate
Assistants participate in weekly counseling case review conferences. Career
Development Counseling will also include workshops, career assessment,
preprofessional advising and graduate study related programming, preparing
students for internships, assisting students with resume and cover letter
development, job search skills, conducting Internet job searches, using
OCSPA's web-based employment recruiting system, and opportunities for
employment.
Designing and delivering career development program components including
providing individual and group career development counseling and guidance
based on individual mastery of competencies: communication, critical
thinking, teamwork, change management, information technology, leadership,
self-managed learning, interpersonal diversity, ethics and social
responsibility, and technical knowledge.
Candidates must be pursuing a graduate degree in higher education
administration, counseling, public or business administration, or a related
discipline. Graduate Assistants/Interns will have the opportunity to become
involved with a variety of responsibilities as you gain the skills necessary
for success as a career development professional. Through this experience
Graduate Assistants/Interns will contribute to the effective delivery of
OCSPA services and programs, and will benefit from opportunities to:
- develop an understanding of how higher education can prepare students to
enter the workforce or continue their education at the graduate/professional
level.
- develop skills in the areas of counseling, assessment, programming, and
administration, including exposure to individual and group career
counseling, facilitating student self-assessment, critiquing resumes and
cover letters, video-taped interview role-playing, design and delivery of
career development and job search workshops, use of web-based technology in
delivery of career services, designing and writing office publications and
advertisements for programs
Hours and compensation contingent upon candidates qualifications and
preparation. Graduate Assistants work 25 hours/week for up to $8000 for 9
months, August 24 - May 31.
