Tim DeGroot's and Dave Ackerman's posts are likely to bring out the fact
that there is great variablility in philosophy, pedogogy, and course
offerings across MBA programs. Like many other schools, Texas Tech went
through a period of reflection about our MBA program that ultimately lead
to a reorganization. With respect to Management classes, we now require of
all students the following: 1) An Executive Skills class at the beginning
of their program. This is a "soft" skills class that emphasizes giving
talks, team building, negotiation and conflict resolution, problem solving,
giving positive reinforcement, self aassessment (Covey, What color is your
parachute, CPI, MBTI), etc. 2) A combination OB/OT course with a heavy
emphasis on high performance management teams. 3) Strategic and global
management capstone course.
In addition to these required courses, we also offer electives in a variety
of areas from Leadership to Health Organization Management. (We offer one
of the few MD/MBA programs in the US that is accredited buy both AACSB and
ACHESA).
I am not sure that the it matters which courses students take as long as
Professors are committed to giving them valid, reliable, and current
information that will enable them to become self learners and critical
thinkers.
