May I suggest you, the student, and the company jointly define a set of
objectives for the student to meet during the period and outline what
type of a report you expect to be written/orated upon the students
return. By setting these standards at the outset, you should be able to
hold both the company and the student accountable.
I recall an MBA candidate I had interning with me one summer. My first
instruction to her was to completely deny that she knew how to file or
type. Then, I gave her a market research project and told her to
accomplish it. Eventually, we ended up hiring her and she became a
crackerjack executive.
