I would like to hear from HRM practitioners how EAP (employee assistance
programs) are being handled. Do firms tend to do all in house, subcontract out,
have outside professionals on retainer, etc.? How much activity is related to
substance abuse vs. wellness programs? Who pays: the firm, individual,
insurance carrier? How do small & medium size firms differ in EAP compared to
large firms? Any info is appreciated. Thanks, Ray Vegso

    Ray,

I wrote a chapter in a book on the above topic, which you may be able to
find. It is titled "Health Care Handbook" and is published by Warren,
Gorham & Lamont. I believe it answers most of the questions you raised.

The only question I believe it is silent on (guess I need to revise that
chapter) is the matter of cost for the basic EAP program. It is my
experience that basic EAP program costs are born by the employer. If there
is a referral to a provider outside the EAP, or if there are extensive
services provided, then there will be cost sharing by the employee. By
extensive services I mean extended counseling visits for mental
health/chemical dependency or more than a brief interaction with an attorney.

I hope this helps. If you need anything further, please let me know.
