Simple and easy ways to avoid sending viruses to other people:
    1. Send documents as RTF (Rich Text Format). This preserves all formatting,
fonts, graphics, etc., but does not send macros. Side effect: the filesize may
be dramatically SMALLER when Word docs are saved as RTF. How: File - Save as
type - Rich Text Format (RTF). Readable by most word processors.

    2. Save doc as HTML. Either send the HTML or post it on a website and send the
    URL.
    Less convenient.

    3. Save doc, run macro-virus checker before sending. Less convenient, requires
buying and continually updating anti-virus definitions.

    4. Print to Acrobat PDF Writer and create PDF file, which can then be sent or
posted on a web site. Requires access to Adobe Acrobat Exchange software, which
isn't free. Academic price is low ($49, I believe).

Does anybody else know of other low-cost ideas?

    John,
We have been using HTML now for a year with with few people complaining.
It allows you to express yourself fully and adds good formatting which
leads to reader interest. However, some users do not understand that
html does not allow execution. For those people, we use a automated text
    version formatted by Netscape.

Netscape also has an html composer which can be used as a email writer
    without leaving netscape.

Hint on using pdf files. Include a copy of acrobat reader or tell reader
how to get it. free at www.adobe.com

And another alternative, especially for e-mail--save document as ASCII text
and paste it into the email.
