    Journal of Management Education
    Special Issue Call For Papers

    INNOVATIONS IN COMPETENCY-BASED MBA EDUCATION

Guest Editors: Richard E. Boyatzis and Poppy L. McLeod (Case Western Reserve
    University)

Over the past decade or so, rampant criticism of management education, the
fear of falling enrollments, desire for market distinctiveness, and demands
for outcome-based self-study in the accreditation process provoked many MBA
programs to attempt innovations aimed at increasing students' competencies.
What characterizes these innovations and how have they fared in the
intervening years? What is the current status of competency-based
management education? What dilemmas and challenges face designers and
implementers of competency-based MBA programs? What can be said about the
    future of competency-based management education?

In this special issue of The Journal of Management Education, we are
requesting papers that describe innovations in competency-based MBA
curricula and provide a critical assessment of these innovations. We seek
conceptual and empirical papers that address the efficacy of such programs
with respect to improving MBA graduates' ultimate potential to become
effective managers. In addition, we wish to generate an inventory of
innovations that can offer practical guidance for adopting competency-based
    methods in MBA curricula.

We are especially interested in manuscripts that address the following
    issues:

    * What kind of competency-based program models are in use, and what is
their effectiveness? What criteria are and should be used to determine
    which models are effective?

    * How should learning sessions be structured to facilitate delivery of
competency-based education and to enhance its effectiveness (e.g., classroom
vs. field-based; role of teacher/trainer vs. role of students; effective
    activities and materials).

    * What relevant program design issues (e.g., graded vs. not-graded
courses; instruction by in-house faculty vs. paid trainers; required vs.
elective course), should be considered, and how should these issues be
configured for effective implementation of competency-based education?

    * What should the role of competency-based curricula be outside of
departments of management/organizational behavior? For example, how should
competency-based programs be integrated into existing "discipline-defined"
courses or should they be offered separately? How should these programs be
integrated with administrative functions such as career placement or should
they be kept as a strictly academic endeavor?

Manuscripts should be submitted in quadruplicate, typewritten, and
double-spaced. Authors should follow the Publication Manual of the American
Psychological Association (4th Edition) in preparing manuscripts. Cover
letters should designate manuscripts for this special issue. Submissions
must be received by June 30, 1999 in the editor's office (Diana Bilimoria,
Editor, Journal of Management Education, Department of Organizational
Behavior, Weatherhead School of Management, Case Western Reserve University,
10900 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland OH 44106-7235). Those interested in
