  • 1.  on-line, basic information about management development?

    Posted 04-07-1999 15:51
Does anyone know of any on-line sources of basic inforamtion about
management development, e.g., review of standard management skills and
functions, basic training/development terms, types of assessments to
discern training/development needs, various management development
processes, continuing professional development for managers, etc? I
realize that I'm asking for a great deal of information, but I'm
surprised there isn't more on the net now.

I've searched the net off and on for several days. There is an explosion
of information about leadership skills needed in today's organizations
(often this information is in the form of highly abstract, reflective
essays). There is some basic management theory information, but not much
(i.e., on basic roles/functions of management, history, vertical and
horizontal types, and basic skills). There is also a great deal of
training and development information geared for training and development
practitioners, and a small portion of this might be useful to
    supervisors.

Any consolidated, basic sources of info out there? Thanks in advance for
    any suggestions!

Carter, if you haven't done so already, you might want to check out our
31-module Management and Supervisor Training (MAST) program available at
no cost through the Departmentof Energy's (DOE) technology transfer
program. The DOE and Westinghouse operate an interactive web site to
facilitate the transfer of educational and training materials from the
DOE Carlsbad Area Office to US organizations and citizens. The site
    address is:

    http://www.t2ed.com

    The site contains the following:

-- List and short descriptions of available materials, including
leadership, instructor, management, and general employee needs analysis
tools and surveys; training manuals; and leadership, management, TQM,
    and grantwriting courses.
-- On-line form to request materials
    -- Transfer terms and conditions
-- Center for downloading versions in PC MSWord 7.0a; PC WordPerfect
5.x; Mac MSWord 5.1; Adobe PDF 3.0 (over 100,000 pages of material
    total)

To obtain materials at no cost, simply go to the site and fill out an
on-line form. We will obtain necessary approvals and send to you a user
ID and password for downloading the requested material directly from the
    web site.

Re Carter's request. Keely's material is good. Some of the ideas developed
by MAST proved useful as I devised a general set of modules I call "capacity
building" designed for managers and supervisors.
