Many project management texts and PMI's Project Management
Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) identify certain supposed "best
practices" which organizations might employ to successfully
manage projects. I am now looking for volunteers to
participate in an informal research study to determine
which of these supposed best practices may be actually
correlated to project success. Participants will be asked
    to ANONYMOUSLY provide:
    1. Background information about a specific project they
have recently completed, including information on how
successful they feel the project was. [Note: This may be
ANY kind of project in any industry. It need not be
    training or HR-related.]
    2. Feedback regarding which of the "best practices" their
organization employed during the time in which this project
    was undertaken.

TIME REQUIRED: It should only take about 15 or 20 minutes
    to complete the survey.

METHODOLOGY: You will be sent a survey questionnaire as an
e-mail attachment. You will then complete this survey on
your computer, save it, and send it back to me. I will
then analyze all questionnaires received and summarize the
findings. Finally, I will make the summary findings
available to all list members and possibly publish these in
    an appropriate journal.

BENEFITS OF PARTICIPATING: The questionnaire contains over
90 items which constitute supposed project management "best
practices." You may examine these and use them as the
basis of your own informal assessment of your
organization's PM practices. In addition, you may have the
satisfaction of knowing you helped advance the field of PM
by participating in the survey. ;-)

If you'd like TO VOLUNTEER, please e-mail me at:

    Thanks!

    Hi Michael,
You should be aware that we (by this I mean the peak Project Management
body in this country) have already developed a raft of standards relating
to the competencies applied by project managers. These cover the project
coordinator, the project manager and the program manager and describe the
skills and knowledge applied by 'best practice' project managers. They
align with the PMBoK and in fact use the guide as a reference for
underpinning knowledge (but only one of many references).

My company, and the university for whom I lecture, have been using these
for a few years now and are amazed at how people's projects are just taking
off simply by applying the competencies.
