When we hear the word "service" in the realm of teaching, we often think of service learning; however, service in teaching and learning is so much more than that. We serve our students by helping them to learn and thrive. They serve each other when they work together and help each other, and students, faculty, staff, businesses and the community often unite and serve each other's mutual needs. Come, join us as we explore these themes and others at the 43rd annual OBTC Teaching Conference for Management Educators.
In this conference we encourage participants to extend our tradition of being interactive and experiential, as they explore ways in which they unite and serve others. We welcome a wide variety of submissions, including, but not limited to, the following areas:
- Creating a climate where students unite and serve each other to fulfill a common goal.
- Encouraging students to "think beyond" the textbook as they broaden their understanding of what it means to unite in service.
- Uniting together to support ourselves and our colleagues as we progress through different career stages.
- Appreciating the diversity in our classrooms and our world and leveraging it to create a unified front as we serve our communities.
- Uniting and serving students who are in non-traditional educational models (e.g., distance learning).
- Linking students with the community in a mutually beneficial way that serves both and deepens learning.
Feel free to be creative about what "uniting us in service" means to you and share your ideas and exercises with us.
Sessions may be 30, 60, or 90 minutes long, and we encourage interactive and experiential submissions that connect learning and service. All submissions are blind reviewed. Conference submissions will open up on November 16, 2015.
Walsh University is located on a beautiful 136-acre suburban campus in North Canton, 55 miles south of Cleveland, in Northeast Ohio. Walsh is easily reached by flying into the Akron-Canton regional airport (CAK) which is 6 miles from campus. Flying into Cleveland (CLE) is another option about an hour away, and the Pittsburgh airport is a two-hour drive from campus.
We look forward to welcoming you to North Canton, and while in Northeast Ohio, you can find plenty to do when not developing your career at OBTC! The Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton is minutes from campus, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland is another popular destination. Hidden gems in the area include the Military Air Preservation Society (MAPS) museum minutes from Walsh, and the National Inventor's Hall of Fame less than a half hour away in Akron.
