Hope that I'm not wasting your bandwidth with the listing of the following
programs, but these are some of the security checking items that are on two
of my machines. I've been running them for several weeks, with Netscape
4.73 being my primary browser. Don't seem to have any problems with them,
will soon try them out on my campus computer. Given the BrownOrrifice
potential problem in Netscape, and the various bugs in IE, I'm not sure that
these make all of that much of a difference, but I'm hopeful.
I'm also getting ready for the Fall semester, and for processing student
disks. All kinds of goodies turn up on those things.

=======================
A highly recommended program that checks for adware (it is under constant
development, and is recommended by Steve Gibson):
http://www.lavasoft.de/free.html#Anchor--N-43785
An early version didn't use English, added a certain level of excitement to
using the program. I don't recommend letting it delete certain files,
unless you are absolutely sure of the file's purpose. But, it does a good
job of locating files that might be worth a closer look, especially those
Windows files that have been modified by another program.
This one helps me with those web bugs, also has scripts available for a few
other purposes:

The instructions are a bit sketchy, on the download page, be sure to read
the section on configuring your browser, essentially, you're setting this
program to serve as a local host.
Download a very useful hosts file (also under constant updating):

I'd heard about the use of a Hosts file before, but not in this context.
And, it really works well on my computers.
Find eDexter here, for use with both a hosts file and Netscape:
