A link between management education and development and the glitch in the
auto-responder at Lake Michigan College for me comes at many levels and
applies to diverse situations. In this particular case I want to share how
'something' can infect us to act, propagate a particular thing and compound
the problem without one being conscious of what is going on. A virus of the
mind can be related to management as the reason that the latest fad out
there spreads. Also the reason why chain letters work and provide insights
into the inner-workings of pyramidal schemes, like Amway. It can also shed
light into the mood organizations have and the spread of word of mouth
campaigns. Finally understanding them may help us design better policies and
education programs or even prevent us from falling victim and unconsciously
spreading them. Similar to the effect of knowing about visual and cognitive
illusions, the conscious individual is better equipped to deal with them.
Some viruses require the machine to be executed and propagated while others
require to be executed and propagated by the individual using the machine.
Cordially,
Esteban
