CRITICAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO MANAGEMENT AND LEARNING

A series of conferences organized by the Learning and Critique Network

    LEARNING AND PRACTICE

    One-Day Conference

    Wednesday November 8, 2000, Manchester

    Scope of the Conference

Learning has taken a centre stage position in many recent discussions about
organisational and individual development. In common with other conferences
in this series, Learning and Practice contributes to a debate that questions
our current understandings of learning and knowledge in diverse work
contexts, including educational as well as industrial organizations. Further
    details can be found at
    http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/town/close/hr22/lcnsite.

The focus of Learning and Practice is upon the situated quality of learning.
Learning and Practice considers learning as a mutual process in which there
is a sharing of stories or narratives between practitioners and between
academics/and practical learners. Learning is seen to be inextricably tied
to processes of identity (re)formation and embedded in power relations.
Learning and Practice should be of interest to academics and practitioners
who value critical approaches to the practicalities of learning. The
conference has direct relevance for a number of areas currently receiving
attention across a wide range of business, voluntary and public sector
organizations - including knowledge management, teamworking and
    organizational learning.

    Conference Themes

    Organisational Learning as Situated Practice
    Action Learning in Diverse Contexts
    Learning through Narratives
Identity and Power Relations in Learning Processes
    Conference Format

The conference will centre on debate and participation, involving small
groups, rather than relying heavily upon the classic, formal style of
presentation. Colleagues are invited to bring posters, papers, handouts and
other materials relevant to the theme for exchange. The interactive format
of the symposium will be supported by a panel of provocateurs who will
make brief statements in response to presentations by the keynote speakers.

    Keynote speakers:

Jean Lave, co-author of Situated Learning,
    University of Berkeley, California

Tony Watson, author of In Search of Management
    Nottingham Trent University, UK
