Employers' Recruitment Strategies in the New Graduate Labour Market

    Seminar, 6 July 1999
    Engineering Management Building
    University of Warwick
    Coventry, CV4 7AL
    Free event

Next month the Institute for Employment Research (IER) in conjunction
with the Council for Industry and Higher Education (CIHE) is hosting a
half day seminar at the University of Warwick. The purpose of the
seminar is to explore how employers' recruitment strategies are changing
in the light of the massive expansion in the number of graduates
entering the labour market. In particular, the seminar will address the
opportunities of what might be called non-traditional graduates (e.g.
    mature graduates).

The seminar will commence at 1pm with a buffet lunch and will end at
4.pm promptly. The seminar will be chaired by Richard Brown (Director
of CIHE) and will include brief presentations from Powergen, Professor
Kate Purcell, the Careers Advisory Service, and the Association of
Graduate Recruiters. Attached is further information about the seminar.

If you wish to attend the seminar please complete the attached booking
form. There is no charge for attending the seminar. If you require any
further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.

    Yours sincerely,

    Terence Hogarth,
    Principal Research Fellow.

Wider access to higher education means that the supply of graduate
labour is more plentiful and more diverse than ever before. It is
agreed by policy-makers and employers that it is in the interests of
economic competitiveness that everyone, regardless of age or social
background, are enabled to reach their full potential and gain the
greatest possible benefit from the education system.

During 1998, the Council for Industry and Higher Education (CIHE)
commissioned the Institute for Employment Research (IER) at the
University of Warwick to investigate the extent to which employers'
recruitment practices take account of changes in graduate supply. The
report has now been published by CIHE as:

Graduate Opportunities, Social Class and Age
Employers' Recruitment Strategies in the New Graduate Labour Market
    by
    Kate Purcell and Terence Hogarth
with Jane Pitcher and Christine Jacobs

To explore further the implications of wider participation in higher
education on business, the Institute for Employment Research and the
Business Processes Resource Centre are hosting a half-day seminar
    entitled:

Employers' Recruitment Strategies in the New Graduate Labour Market

Richard Brown, Director of CIHE will chair the seminar; a presentation
of the findings of the research will be made by the authors, followed by
a series of responses from industry.
