I need to make a presentation on the Theory of Constraints relative to
manufacturing. I was wondering if anyone can recommend a source for
information that talks about this topic. So far, everything I have been able
to find pertains to companies that do training or consulting in that arena.
I just need a description of the topic.

    Thank you very much.

For information on the Theory of Constraints see:
    http://www.rogo.com/cac/
    http://www.focusedperformance.com/main/toc1.html
    http://www.sytsma.com/cism700/toc.html

I understand that YOU have to make a presentation on it. Though, I think
that this is a great topic to have students present in operations management
courses. I make a voluntary extra-credit opportunity and hordes want to do
it. I recommend that they listen to the tape of Goldratt book that presents
it in the form of a novel THE GOAL. The tape and book are both available
    from sources like amazon.com :

Al. If you can obtain a copy of the 1999 Edition of EMERGING PRACTICES
IN COST MANAGEMENT by James B. Edwards, published by Warren, Gorham and
Lamont (800-950-1213), Section L has five articles that deal with TOC.

    Al:

"The Goal" is the starting place. Every good manufacturing person I
know has read it. It's a cult book of sorts among them. I think I've
read that there are over 1 million copies of its various editions now in
    print.

Its author, Eliyahu Goldratt, an Israeli physicist by training, has
other books out on the theory of constraints (TOC), including "It's Not
Luck" (follow-up to The Goal), "Critical Chain" (the application of TOC
to project management), "The Theory of Constraints," and "The Haystack
Syndrome." In addition, the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA)
published "The Theory of Constraints and Its Implications for Management
Accounting," a 'report on the actual implementation of the theory of
    constraints.'

IMA has also published a Statement on Management Accounting (SMA)
related to TOC. It's SMA #4HH entitled "Theory of Constraints (TOC)
Management System Fundamentals." Each SMA is published in a small,
concise, well-written booklet. You can get a copy from IMA @
    800.638.4427, x278.

The Goldratt Institute is located at 442 Orange St., New Haven, CT
    06511 (tel. 203.624.9026; fax 203.624.9607). Website: www.goldratt.com

I'm not affiliated w/these folks, by the way. But I did attend its
basic TOC curriculum, "The Jonah Course," in 1992. The two-week course
was one of the most intense intellectual experiences of my life. There
were eight of us in the class. Unbeknownst to me, I had seated myself
between two shift managers from Intel's Albuquerque plant. The first
morning, we went around the table with biographical stuff.

Well, the guy on my right introduced both himself and the fellow on my
left. One ran the graveyard shift and the other the swing shift. The
guy said, "We're here because our CEO, Andy Grove, has mandated that we
improve plant productivity by 15 percent."

    He paused.

    Then, "Per month."

Every time I think my business is tough, I remember that!

    Hope this is helpful--
