I highly recommend the book "First, Break All The Rules" by Marcus
Buckingham and Curt Coffman, ISBN 0-684-85286-1, published by Simon &
Schuster. The authors are both with the Gallup Organization and the book
discusses the results of two management surveys Gallup conducted:
The first concentrated on "What do the most talented employees need from
the workplace?"
The second addressed "How do the world's greatest managers find, focus, and
keep talented employees?"
Excellent reading and a wealth of research information.

Subject: [MG-ED-DV] Managerial skills
Dear all,
I am looking for a recent survey or research highlighting desired skills,
qualities, competencies which are currently sought by organizations. I
came across some of the qualities such as:
communication skills
managing time and stress
recognize, define, & solve problems
motivate and influence others
delegating
setting goals and articulate vision
team building skills
managing conflicts
or
Communication / Listening/ Understanding People
Negotiation
Leadership/Create Enthusiasm/Motivate
Selling/Marketing
Co-ordination/Teambuilding/Working in Teams
Cross-cultural Skills/Mobility/Global Thinking
Languages
Information Technology
Networking
However, I am looking for a good source to reference in a paper which I
am trying to write for a management education conference. Also, I am
looking for online research on which delivery mode to use (face-to-face,
online, or both) to develop these skills or to train managers in such soft
skills. My initial thinking (hypothesis) is that the above skills are ill
suited for online delivery mode and need to be conducted in face-to-face
sessions or mixed mode. Any comments or feedback will be highly
appreciated.
