The Center for Nonprofit Management, here in Minneapolis and St. Paul,
recently started a state-of-the art Institute for Executive Director
Development for executive directors in the local area. Other development
programs (for-profit or nonprofit) in the nation might be interested in
learning from the Institute's rather novel approach to meeting learners'
development needs -- needs too often not met in traditional development
programs. Institute personnel will gladly share information with other
development programs if they are interested.

UNIQUE FEATURES ABOUT THE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM:
    1. Is based on current principles of adult education (including that
adults learn best from actually applying information and exchanging
    ongoing feedback around those experiences).
    2. Includes focus on learners' outcomes of skills in reflection and
inquiry (skills in continuous learning -- "learning how to learn"), in
addition to core management knowledge, such as planning, organizing,
    etc.
    3. Considers management development and self-development to be highly
integrated, that is, you can't lead and manage an organization well if
you can't lead and manage yourself well, too.

PROGRAM INTEGRATES SEMINARS, COACHING AND GROUP-COACHING:
Each learner in the program experiences the following.
    1. Traditional seminars (12 of them) to convey knowledge about core
competencies in the role of executive director
    2. Personal coaching, to help guide and support each learner's personal
development (coaching is provided by trained coaches)
    3. Peer-coaching (facilitated action-learning) groups in which each
learner in the group gets help from other learners. Learners help each
    other by exchanging:
    a) support to apply seminar materials,
    b) feedback around their application of materials,
    c) probing questions to reframe complex issues, and
    d) supportive challenges to help each learner move forward in their
    development.
