  • 1.  Mind-mapping software

    Posted 02-22-2000 03:13
The following was posted for Wayne Taken:

I am working with my undergraduate class of human resource majors (mostly
seniors) to look at the field of Human Resources as a series of processes.
(A difficult sell for many HR practitioners, with their aversion to numbers,
technology and data). I teach an Internet and Access-based Organizational
Staffing course at Temple University. We are trying to use mind-mapping
techniques to identify each step in the staffing process (recruiting,
    selections, career management, etc)

Rather then continue to do this by hand, does anyone know of a software
package for mind-mapping or to use to identify/write down processes? Thanks
    in advance for your replies.

    Visio has some mind-mapping templates.

    Wayne,

    Take a look at these:

    http://www.mindmapper.com/fun.htm

    http://world.std.com/~emagic/mindmap.html#Software

I haven't tried any of them so would appreciate knowing what you find.

Yes, Visio is designed for doing process mapping. It contains several
templates for different types of maps that can be used.

I find my non-technical students enjoy a process orientation that maps the
activities they perform. Discovering which activities have to be
sequential, which could be better done in parralel; which have wasteful
handoffs; and which fall through the cracks of either wait-states or poor
    communications paths (like lost faxes).

Using these forms of activity process maps they can see where the things
that are being done don't add value and can be done more effectively.

Doesn't have to be any technology involved to make activity mapping
    worthwhile.

INSPIRATION 5. has a mind-mapping module; also academic pricing.
ALSO a Corporate-focussed product that used to be called MINDLINK.
I don't have current addresses for either. I would expect Inspiration to be
in business, not so sure about the other.

I would also suggest a web search. The concept is quite popular, especially
in the UK due to the work of Tony Buzan. The original source incidentally
    is a book on writing.

I have done searches several times for software on creativity support.
There is a lot out there, including shareware.

You are discussing Stella II, (or iThink, same thing).

Check it out, and yes, what you are discussing can be done, but you
_may_ gotta have some numbers to express what you are doing. Things
like time to process a step, time to move from one desk to another, how
    many applications = 1 interview, or = 1 offer

If you don't use numbers for these things (no, you don't have to), you
will need to express how things are related - what influences, or
causes, what else. See the excellent notebook on simulation/model
development that came with my copy of Stella II.

See also the Creative Learning Exchange, at http://sysdyn.mit.edu/cle/
They really know how to do it, for lots of ages and technical
    capabilities.

I've been a INSPIRATION user and fan for some time. But I just saw an ad in
the Jan/Feb issue of Fast Company for something called Mind Manager. From
the small ad it looked like mind mapping software. The web site is
    www.mindmanager.com.

I use this software and my company has a corporate license. We think it's
great. Head and shoulders above anything else I've seen. It provides a
great way to share Mind Maps: By e-mail, web page or by displaying on a
monitor. You can also print them out in color as large as you wish.
They offer a free trail and also a low cost version eMindMaps. They are the
only Official Mind Mapping® Software for educational use approved by Tony
Buzan, the originator of the Mind Mapping method.
