General Information
It's Europe this time! On the famed European Romantic Road, Rothenburg
is Germany's best-preserved "walled" town. And, if exploring the
picturesque town isn't enough, Rothenburg is centrally located for
exploring southern Germany, Switzerland and Austria. A picture of
Rothenburg is featured on Rick Steves' 2001 Europe Through The Back
Door, 19th Edition, which is also a great resource for any European
traveler, which we encourage you to purchase.
Information and pictures of the Rothenburg area can be found at
www.pbase.com/spider/ germanyrothenburg,
www.speechcode.com/ETBD-1999.php3?region=rothenburg , and
www.germany-castles.net . Information on the Hotel Rappen is available
in German at
www.hotel-rappen.com. For the English version, go to the
Google search engine, type in Hotel Gasthof Zum Rappen, and click on
"translate this page".
More About Rothenburg
Rothenburg is at the northern end of the Romantische Strasse (Romantic
Road), a string of historic towns, churches, and castles that stretches
south from Rothenburg to King Ludwig's castle, Neuschwanstein, near
Fussen. Rothenburg is a city that progress passed by after the
Napoleonic Wars, and the city hasn't changed much since. During its
heydays in the 1400s, Rothenburg was once a prosperous walled free
imperial city, controlling much of the land for miles around. After the
Napoleonic Wars, Rothenburg's lands were dispersed, partly to the
Kingdom of Bavaria and partly to the Kingdom of Wÿrttemberg and became a
sleepy backwater on the Bavarian border with little strategic or
economic importance. Consequently, the town has managed to retain much
of its medieval charm.
The earliest settlements in and around Rothenburg were about 500 B.C.
Celtic tribes had a fortification on the western slopes of the Tauber
valley. The village of Detwang, today part of the town, was founded
about 960 A.D. In 970 A.D. the first medieval stronghold was built. In
1142, an imperial castle was added, but an earthquake destroyed both
castles in 1356. On May 15 in 1247, Rothenburg became a free city of
the German Empire under the emperor's special protection. This
privilege initiated a great prosperity. The town developed into a
trading center and became one of the leading communities in southern
Germany. In 1400 Rothenburg had a population of 6000.
