But I wager a guess that if a) the behavior on this list were a bit more
    adept,
and/or b) there was some level of moderation you find many more
    participants sharing more.

I am going to repeat something that I said to new list members on the
training and development list for those newbies on this list. Don't be
afraid to post, even though you might anticipate negative or even rude
responses from others. I have found, as a new member of many listserves and
a new member to this field, that sometimes you do get what initially seems
to be a rude response. However, if you take up the matter with the person
on a one-on-one level (and please note that I think that is the most
important aspect--that you do it away from the comments and eyes of the
entire list), you will generally find that the intent behind the response
is greatly different from your own perception of the intent. I have
offended others on another list, but through dialog (off the list) we were
both able to learn where the other person was coming from and reach a
common understanding. This is a marvelous learning tool when used
appropriately and if you are able to separate yourself from the poor
communication skills of others you will be able to learn more than you ever
    imagined.
