    Hello.

This is a different topic, but am researching how other schools handle
computer competencies for business majors (as opposed to MIS/CIS/CS
majors). How do you handle competency testing for entering students, and
how do you determine the content of the computer course(s). Also, does
anyone have two skills based courses for business majors, in addition to
    the MIS course.

Please accept my apologies if this topic has already been discussed.

At ESCEM School of Business and Management all students have the opportunity
to pass the PCIE which is a test, leading to a European diploma which
declares that the student has good computer skills. Many European companies
are now requiring this of business students.

In addition all students are required to buy portable computers which are
equiped with the most commonly used computer software. Because of the
computer purchase requirements, students are immediately exposed to the
computer and all of it's possibilities and complexities. There are core
courses which teach the use of all of the computer applications with the
best students acting as tutors for the less experienced.

In addition to this, students learn specific software programs through the
IS courses, which they follow every semester, but also they will be
required to use these programs in non IS classes. For example, in a
research class we would require them to use Sphinx, which is the French tool
for gathering and analyzing data for research.

In my OB classes, students must put together Powerpoint presentations and
    develop their own websites.

We require 6 semester hours of computer courses in addition to
either MIS or Accounting Info Systems. Students may test out of 3
    credits of the computer skills.
