Active learning can serve as a platform to address sustainability, ethics, and social entrepreneurship by engaging students in experiential activities with external organizations for initiatives with a social mission. Increasingly, there are new forms of hybrid organizations that seek to blend a market-based approach with a social purpose. A variety of active learning approaches provide an opportunity to promote collaboration between students and external organizations for a social goal. These active learning approaches can serve as pedagogical methods that support the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME, 2012). Building on the theme of a presentation in November 2012 at the NYU-Stern Conference on Social Entrepreneurship (Siqueira & Ramos, 2012) about the use of active learning education, this PDW starts with a panel of faculty engaged in active learning in different countries. Panelists (and topics) include Ana Siqueira (student case writing and case competition), Diane Ramos (live consulting projects), Mario Monzoni (board game about climate change), Louise Kelly (cross-national student collaboration), Linda Sama (GLOBE social entrepreneurship course, winner of the 2012 Innovation in Entrepreneurship Pedagogy Award), and Kamel Mnisri (global MBA case study). Participants will then break up into smaller discussion groups, each facilitated by a panelist and/or co-organizer. We will conclude with a collective discussion of insights about different pedagogical methods, assessment of learning outcomes, and new directions in active learning education internationally.
