With continuing economic instability and enforced austerity, both business and academic institutions are seeking new ways to ensure their success and take advantage of emerging opportunities. However, critics continue to dispute the legitimacy of business academic institutions in addressing these challenges. They argue against what they see as the instrumental, amoral, self-centered vision of human behavior inherent in management theory, practice and training; a lack of integration across disciplines and functions; a reduced focus on the social sciences and humanities in business education; a disconnect between the global, uncertain contexts that managers face and the training they receive; a failing to deliver on globalisation promises; and an emphasis on professional knowledge over professional ideals, which reinforces short-termism, short-sightedness and unsocial practices.
All of these criticisms lead us to consider the role of business education in a chaotic ever-changing world. What is needed is a more holistic revaluation of its research, pedagogy and role in society. These institutions must take stock and chart the way forward while coming to grips with global financial and political crises and reflecting on the lessons to be learnt. The 2012 EDiNEB Conference will provide a forum for educators and practitioners to reflect on these issues and present their (research / good practice) papers in five tracks.
Conference Track Themes:
Track 1: Professional and Societal Relevance of Business Education
How can academic research be made more practically relevant to business? How can the business academe enhance alliances with the corporate world to ensure that students are prepared for an uncertain global world? How can they embrace the long-term implications of the frontier of relevant disciplinary insights for practice? How can they create alliances with pivotal institutional actors in the public, private and nonprofit domains? How can we ensure that there is a good fit between the global contexts and business education? How can we respond to new developments in society / the professional field faster and more flexibly? How are employability and informal learning relevant? What can business academia learn from new innovations in business such as co-working, network organizations, crowd-sourcing etcetera? How can we make work-based/practice-based learning a more sustainable business education model?
Track 2: Business Education catering to the Networked Student
What are the characteristics of the networked student? What are the learning styles of the 2012 business student? How adapted is e-learning/web-based/blended learning to today's business student? Are we making adequate use of all the technological possibilities out there (augmented reality, (mirrored) virtuality, alternate reality)? How can we make better use of these technologies for enabling learning? What are student expectations regarding ICT in business education? How are business educators tailoring their pedagogy and practice to networked business students? What are the true costs for developing and maintaining e-learning programs?
Track 3: The Social Purposes of Business Education
How can we embed business education in a broader social purpose? How are social actors represented within business education? How can civic engagement enhance business education? How can the current model of human behavior (i.e. Homo Economicus) be appraised and reassessed/redefined? How does business education promote citizenship and correct social behavior? Is there a need for a professional oath or code of conduct? What is the position of the 'Person' in current business education and practice? How can business schools as organizations be more "mindful"? What impact does business education have on society?
Track 4: Business Education catering to Third Age Learners
Should lifelong education be the centerpiece of our response to the necessarily incomplete knowledge we currently possess and can transfer to students in the classroom? With people having to work longer, will third age education reach business academia and how will they cater to these new populations? Should educational contents change? Does an output based education system fit the concept of lifelong and third ager education? Is there a place for spirituality in business education? Does business academia need to practice what it preaches?
Track 5: Other Developments and/in Business Education
What else is happening in de world that we need to adapt to, learn from or pay attention to? What teaching and learning practices are espoused by educators and practitioners in business education to deal with these? What new instructional/learning design are addressing criticisms and challenges to business education successfully? What is happening in various EU countries and internationally that can be adapted to national institutional contexts?
Following the conference, the papers will be peer-reviewed for publication in our book series "Advances in Business Education and Training", published by Springer. EDiNEB is known for its emphasis on educational research, its focus on bridging business education with business practice, and its spirit to share experiences and knowledge on innovation. Our conference provides an excellent opportunity to submit papers for peer review and get selected for publication in the edited volumes of "Advances in Business Education and Training".
