How Thought is Taught
If we want to go beyond delivering content, how do we teach in ways to encourage critical thinking or systems thinking as a desired outcome? Where is this best accomplished in the course? When are we able to make it happen? Why does it seem so difficult and in what ways do we get past that perceived struggle between content and thinking?
Each of these questions might contribute to a more structured approach to teaching students to think. On the other hand, are there examples of what we might accomplish through less structure and allowing for unintended consequences as a way to reach that same goal?
Proposed sessions for the conference should focus on demonstrating ways in which you encourage students to think – through face-to-face interaction or electronic connection; on campus or at remote sites; as a single exercise, a course focus, or revised curriculum; using innovative methods or creative pathways to get back to the basics . . . . . what can you show us that has worked for you?
We invite you to submit a proposal and/or join a roundtable at MOBTC
2011. The conference is about teaching and sharing ideas, about thoughtful and involving conversations, about collegiality and, most importantly, about improving our professional effort.

• Proposals are limited to a 5 page maximum and must state (1) what you will do, (2) how you will do it, (3) equipment you will need, and (4) how much time you will need. Sessions are usually designed for 30 or 45 minutes.
• The primary purpose should be to demonstrate something others can directly transfer or easily adapt for their own classroom use. Active audience participation is always a plus.
• Good ideas outside the conference theme will be considered, but theme-related proposals are preferred.
• BE SURE to check the information and guidelines for having your proposal considered for 25th MOBTC
Anniversary $1,000 prize for Innovation in Teaching. If you haven't already received the information, see the details below or at:
www.lebow.drexel.edu/mobtc. It's not required that you be in contention for this prize when you submit, but you should at least check it out – C'mon, we're talking $1,000 here!!
As in recent years, we will also have a roundtable involving multiple co-presenters on some specific aspect of the theme, "How Thought is Taught." If you are not submitting a session proposal, but would still like to be on the program as a roundtable panelist, please write to us, indicating:
• Your willingness to participate as a panelist
• Any ideas you have for a focal topic (within the conference theme) for roundtable discussion

In celebration of our upcoming 25th Annual Mid-Atlantic Organizational Behavior Teaching Conference, the steering committee is pleased to announce The MOBTC
Prize for Innovation in Teaching. This is intended to recognize and reward the experiential presentation that best demonstrates innovation relevant to the theme of our conference – "How Thought Is Taught."
Who May Submit
Faculty and graduate students who teach are invited to submit proposals of non-published exercises designed to promote thinking in the management education classes. Submissions must be original and available for free public access to the submitted materials for use in business education anywhere in the world.
Award
The Innovation Prize is $1,000. Finalists will receive non-monetary recognition and the winning exercise will be chosen by the MOBTC
Program Committee. The authors of the nominated best exercises will be invited to submit their work to the Teaching & Learning Section of the
Organization Management Journal for review and publication.
Rules and Criteria for the award proposals:
1) The MOBTC
Steering Committee (Steve Meisel
, Gayle Porter, Stuart Schmidt, Joe Seltzer, & Joan Weiner) will serve as judges and their decision shall be final.
2) All proposals for a 30 minute session will be considered for the award, except those from steering committee members or those which we are explicitly asked not to judge.
3) All proposals must be received by DATE to be considered for the contest.
4) All proposals which are accepted for the conference must be presented by at least one of the authors.
5) Criteria for evaluating the proposals:
a) Demonstration of the conference theme "How Thought is Taught"
b) Quality of the proposal and the session presented at MOBTC
.
c) Creativity and originality of proposal.
d) Extent to which the session presented at MOBTC
includes active participation and engages the audience.
e) The proposal presents a new exercise or a substantial revision of an existing exercise.
6) Guidelines for all proposals
a) Should be original and not under concurrent consideration or scheduled for presentation elsewhere.
b) should be no more than 5 pages long (not including appendices) and state:
i
) What you will do, why it is important and what people will learn,
ii) How you will do it – provide clear instructions and discuss the extent of active involvement of participants,
iii) How it relates to the theme (not all proposals to the conference have to relate to the theme, although it is a criteria for those wishing to be considered for the award).
iv) The proposal should be for an experiential learning session of approximately 30 minutes in length.
v) We are also interested in other proposals on any MOBTC
topic. Those not meant to be considered for the prize will be reviewed for 30, 45 or 60 minute sessions. Please indicate a desired and a minimum acceptable time.
vi) Equipment needed, if any. The conference rooms will have all the normal presentation technology but please give us an idea of what you are planning and will need.
vii) Include as an appendix copies of any material needed to do the exercise (e.g. role play instructions and role descriptions or class handouts). This should be complete enough for the reviewers to actually run your exercise based on what you include.
viii) If your proposal is for a substantial revision of an existing exercise, please include a copy of the original exercise.
