If anyone has access to the book, Papers on A Science of Administration (Gulick & Urwick, eds), I need a favor.  One of the papers in that book is V.A. Graicunas' paper titled Relationship in Organization, which deals with span of control and in which he provides some formulas for calculating the number of relationships that might exist.  He provides two sets; one for a maximum case and one for a minimum case.  I need to check something about those formulas.  If you can access Graicunas' original paper in that book, please contact me so I can clear up something.  I have a copy of the book at home but I'm on the road and can't access mine.

And all you had to do was "Google" it and you have found it :-)

I found it on your site but assumed it was something that was in addition to what was on your site.

    An update.

First, thanks to those who responded.  Second, what happened is that a "glitch" was discovered in the formulas and I wanted to check them against the originals.  Fortunately, as Jack Ring pointed out, I did have the originals in an .htm version of my paper so I was able to correct the glitch in the two .pdf files.  The glitch was drawn to my attention by Marcin Murawski, a student in Gdansk, Poland.  He pointed out that the formulas didn't yield the numbers in the table.  What had happened is that Graicunas provides two sets of formulas, one for the maximum case and one for the minimum case.  I inadvertently replicated the maximum case formulas in the minimum case area.  Anyway, it's all been corrected now.  Thanks again to those who responded.  For those who might be interested, Graicunas' original paper is available at http://www.nickols.us/relationship.pdf.  My comments about span of control and Graicunas' formulas are in a paper at http://www.nickols.us/graicunas.pdf.
