Ethics Tools to Support the Management Professor: The 'What' and the 'How'
The past decade in business has been marred by ethical failures, not only in
the U.S., but globally. Recognizing that many of these companies' leaders
were graduates of the best business schools continues to cause angst among
business school leaders. While the popular press provides plenty of stories
about company failures, there are fewer resources available to professors to
assist in teaching about good ethics as well as modeling good ethics in the
classroom. Sophisticated tools are needed. This workshop, in two parts, will
address these ethics challenges for business professors. First, we'll
introduce participants to Ethix.org, a free case study resource
demonstrating good leadership and ethics in a host of companies, both U.S.
and global. Ethix.org includes a library of nearly 100 in-depth
"conversations" with top executives in all sectors of business and
government. We will form working groups to help develop teaching case
materials based on Ethix.org. In the second part of the workshop, two
members of the Academy's Ethics Education Committee will facilitate
experiential activities highlighting multiple ethical aspects of our
teaching role, no matter what course. Using individual reflection, break out
groups, and role play, participants will gain awareness of their own ethical
posture in the classroom. We'll offer practical, and practiced, strategies
for modeling the ethical behaviors we expect from our students and future
managers. We end the workshop by examining this classroom topic within
multiple lenses, including the individual instructor, the immediate
classroom, and the larger institutional context.
