Management Education and Development
Program Chair: Barbara A. Ritter, Coastal Carolina University, britter@coastal.edu
Specific Domain: The Management Education and Development Division supports theory development and research in management education (academic) and leadership/management development (non-credit instruction). We also support the practice of management education and development by fostering the skill development of our membership through providing workshops in improving effective teaching, learning, and participation and engagement strategies. Major areas of focus include: theoretical advances or empirical evidence about effective and innovative instructional methods or technology; applications of learning theories; and evaluation of studies of the effectiveness of management education and development techniques. Research and benchmark practices in coaching, outcome assessment, learning styles, on-line learning across cultures and environments are of interest as the division serves its membership, the Academy as a whole and the society at large.
MED invites papers and symposia, featuring both theoretical and empirical studies, focused on our Major Topics as well as on the Conference Theme. We also welcome proposals for local excursions that would directly involve our membership.
Major Topics and Thematic Priorities:
- Scholarship on Teaching/Learning - encourages an agenda of inquiry related to teaching/learning and asking questions that create knowledge to advance the practice of management education
· Management Education and Development – research on innovative teaching approaches, experiential learning and simulations, service learning, lifelong, training, ethics, coaching, cross cultural and global issues, humanistic/aesthetic approaches, project-based learning and online learning
- Effective Teaching – studies on effective teaching, both on the individual level as well as on the departmental and program levels
- Learning Assessments –approaches and issues/concerns related to the assessment of student learning such as assessment systems, portfolio assessment, and faculty engagement.
- Learning Styles – examines students' learning styles and how they affect learners' ability to process and comprehend various presentation modalities of management education
· Knowledge Management – creation, dissemination, and assessment
· Teaching and Learning Technologies – value added, innovations and evaluation
Conference Theme: "Capitalism in Question":
What are the research questions we should be asking to improve and inform management education and management development in this cutting-edge area? For example:
· What are some ways to teach students to think critically about our economic system, using both traditional and innovative methods?
· How can we teach students to go beyond the status quo to considering alternative forms of organizing that consider broader stakeholder interests?
· How are our assumptions about teaching practices and content linked to our assumptions engendered by the capitalist economic system?
· What types of management development programs and training approaches could be effective for those interested in decreasing the economic, environmental, and social costs of traditional capitalism?
· How can teachers and practitioners best educate others about the costs of capitalism and inspire action to change?
