2012 MED Division Professional Development Workshops: Call for Proposals

The Management Education & Development Division (MED) of the Academy of Management invites submissions for Professional Development Workshops (PDWs) at the 2012 Annual Meeting in Boston, MA.  PDW sessions will be held on August 3rd and August 4th.

In the past years, MED has emerged as one of the leading AOM divisions in offering top-quality PDWs. We want to build on this proud tradition for our 2012 PDW program by seeking proposals for creative and innovative sessions in which participants can work together to enrich their teaching and research skills and advance management education.

    Content

The primary focus of MED is the study of the organization and delivery of management education and management development.  Hence, we encourage proposals that address the advancement of teaching and learning in all areas of the Academy, including, but not limited to the following areas:

    ·         Theoretical advances or empirical evidence about effective and innovative instructional methods or technology.

    ·         Applications of learning theories.

    ·         Evaluation studies of the effectiveness of management education and development techniques.

    ·         Improving the quality of management education scholarship, including such issues as methodological challenges in our field or emergent areas ripe for research.

MED also welcomes PDWs targeted to provide developmental opportunities for doctoral students and junior faculty, as well as for highly experienced scholars and senior faculty.  Such sessions may include a focus on the following areas:

    ·         Scholarship on Teaching/Learning - encourages an agenda of inquiry related to teaching/learning and asking questions that create knowledge to advance the practice of management education

    ·         Effective Teaching – focuses on the development of the whole teacher including her/his educational philosophy and teaching competency

    ·         Learning Assessments – provides a forum to discuss both the approach and issues/concerns related to the assessment of student learning such as assessment systems, portfolio assessment, and faculty engagement.

    ·         Learning Styles – examines learning styles of individuals and how they affect learners' ability to process and comprehend various presentation modalities of management education

    ·         Teaching Strategies and Techniques – includes efforts especially designed to advancing the conversation on internships, service learning, simulations, project-based learning, online learning, and experiential learning

    Conference Theme: The Informal Economy

In keeping with the theme of the 2012 conference, MED encourages submissions related to commercial activities that occur outside of a governing body's sphere of influence.  Crafting a proposal related to this theme offers a unique opportunity to explore teaching and learning as related to the informal economy.  Questions to be addressed may include, for example: Do current curriculum models allow for the exploration of activities that occur in the informal economy? How best should teachers pose these issues to the student?  Do development opportunities for practitioners allow for building expertise in this area? What are the ethical implications of exploring or not exploring these issues in the academic or non-academic classroom?

    Format

MED encourages the submission of creative and provocative ideas that may occur in a variety of formats such as workshops, town hall meetings, debates, tutorials, panels, tours, roundtable discussions, case studies, tutorials and workout sessions.  We encourage proposals from members of all AOM divisions that relate to the conference theme or other timely issues related to teaching and learning.  In particular, we encourage proposals that:

    ·         Explicitly include and encourage participants' interaction in the workshop

    ·         Take an interdisciplinary approach

    ·         Include non-US based and cross-national themes and participants

    ·         Include practitioners, as well as academics

    Submissions

All PDW organizers are required to submit a proposal using the PDW Proposal Submission Form by Tuesday January 10, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.   The PDW Proposal Submission Form will be available starting November 2 at: http://submissions.aomonline.org/2012
