The need to examine various forms of open governance is due to the questioning of traditional forms of governance and the significant attention that open governance models are drawing. For example, the theme of the 2013 Academy of Management Conference was "Capitalism in Question." Given that capitalism and traditional hierarchical structure seem to be intertwined, questioning one calls for questioning the other and examining alternatives. Furthermore, 2012 was the United Nations' Year of the Cooperatives, one form of open governance. Additional evidence of the international interest in open governance is the 2013 Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Bill of the United Kingdom that provides favorable tax treatment to firms with certain open governance provisions. Research suggests also that organizations with open governance need to be examined and taught because those enterprises that have some form of it outperform those that do not. Thus, the second purpose of this workshop is to increase the dissemination of knowledge about open governance through classroom instruction. Issues such as how open governance either changes or can be enhanced by leadership, property rights, decision processes, transparency, and trust will be examined throughout the workshop. In addition, the impact of open governance on effectiveness and creativity in organizations will be examined. | Search Terms: | Decision Processes , Leadership , Employee Ownership | | | | |
