I'm writing to the list in the hopes that one of you might have an idea for me.  I teach an undergraduate human resource management course and I'm looking for a group project that I can assign.  The project that I have used in the past was to have groups of students pick an imaginary firm/organization in an industry that they choose in consultation with me, and then design the HR "system" for that fictitious organization.  In other words, a group might select a fast food restaurant and then the group would have to figure out what recruitment strategies the restaurant should use, what type of selection predictors it should use, the performance appraisal system, what compensation package the restaurant should offer, etc.  I was thinking that maybe it's time to try something different and I'm wondering if any others who teach a human resource management principles course has any ideas.  If you do, please let me know.  And if you're willing to share a handout or something describing the project, I would be very grateful.

    Thanks in advance

This probably is beyond undergraduates, but......
Suppose the students read Ideas Are FRee, and The Idea-Driven Organization, then see how it might be implemented in different firms.  I'm still trying to figure out how to do it with mfg. of a highly engineered product.  It's been done - Milliken's case is similar, but I'm wondering how much leeway you give the troops when the product requires careful technology to make.

Hi Steven - you might find something useful, or at least some ideas in the attached deck, just presented to an HR Analytics conference in London. Run the slide-show to follow the story and click the links for working models, which work well as short in-class exercises on tablets or laptops.
    Kind regards - Kim Warren

Why not have them find a real company, conduct a study/analysis of that
organization, prepare a report and present the findings - all under your
    watchful eye?

I received the email below in response to my posting.  I thought it worth passing along.

    Hi Fred,

This is a great idea.  I would also like to suggest that he has the students work with his school's library to not only explore which company to target, but once they've chosen one, to research competitors, industry dynamics, etc.

Also, the librarian(s) could help with searching in online article databases and other sources to investigate current HR practices.  For more on this, you might want look at this Note on Managing Organizational Human Capital .

I tried to add a comment to this list last fall but it wasn't accepted.  Even though I'm an AOM member, I guess it was because I'm a librarian.  (Ah well.)

Anyway, I thought it might be worthwhile to pass this along, if you would like to share this with the list for me.

Shrm has a case called motors and more that may fill this need. It is a planning case with various departments represented. I used it as a whole class project creating a set of cross functional teams to work on the integrated project. It worked really well and was lots of fun, let me know if you want more info.

    Dear Steven,

I usually find my students a real HRM project in a real organization (SME or non-profit). To conduct or prepare a recruitment process, to propose a performance appraisal system, to design a training program suitable for the training needs of the staff, etc.

It's very motivating for the students because it has a real impact in real organizations that, by their size, don't have a human resources department, but need some work done in that área.

    Kind regards,
