    The quote you refer to by Pogo appeared in the 1971 Earth Day
    edition of what was a day cartoon strip by Walt Kelly called Pogo:

    It is true that it was used as an anti-war slogan but Kelly had originally
    it aimed squarely at despoiling our natural environment. It is one of my
    favorites too.

    Hi Charles, correct, also the title of his third book
    of cartoons. Sometimes I forget that things I remember
    vividly happened before some of our readers were born,
    and before many of them could read.
