    Albion College is seeking a Director of the Carl A. Gerstacker Institute effective July 1, 2010.  The Carl A. Gerstacker Institute combines the traditional strengths of the liberal arts education with the knowledge, skills and experiences necessary for entry into leadership and management positions in today's global environment. Since 1973, the Gerstacker Institute has earned an excellent reputation for preparing corporate executives, entrepreneurs, accountants, non-profit managers, attorneys and family business owners. In addition, Institute graduates have attended top-tier business and law schools.  The Director, reporting to the Provost, heads a well-respected and rigorous academic institute that integrates course work from a multi-disciplinary range of departments, co-curricular activities, and U.S. and international internships into a traditional liberal arts education.  The Director will be the voice and presence for the program, articulating its distinctiveness to the external community and the media, developing and overseeing internships, recruiting and advising students, and leading the College in continual renewal and improvement of all components of this marquee program of study.  In addition, the Director may teach courses in areas appropriate to his/her academic credentials and experience.

     

    Qualifications:

    • MBA or other advanced degree; 10 years experience in related for-profit/non-profit organization desired
    • Entrepreneurial approach to problem solving and program development
    • Experience working with undergraduate students in higher education is desired but not required
    • Effective communication and mentoring skills, as well as the ability to work collaboratively to build/lead interdisciplinary teams
    • Expert in an area related to the core philosophies and vision of the Institute
    • Experience with external fundraising and demonstrated record of grant writing
    • Leadership experience required, preferably in a higher education environment
    • Understanding of emerging trends in business and management, including globalization and an appreciation for liberal arts education

     

    Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Creating a supportive and stimulating environment for students that enhances the recruitment of new students and retention of current students
    • Developing an internship program that includes both domestic and international experiential learning opportunities, and monitoring internships from student and organizational perspectives
    • Collaborating with all Institutes, Career Development office, and Alumni Engagement office to foster students' career preparedness including an undergraduate mentoring program
    • Collaborating with an interdisciplinary faculty in the development and operation of undergraduate programs related to business and management
    • Facilitating a review of the curricular and co-curricular components of the program and working collaboratively with faculty to support curriculum revision
    • Collaborating with Institutional Advancement to secure external funding to supplement the operational budget of the Institute
    • Supervising the associate director and the coordinator of the Institute
