Mg-Ed-Dvers!
This dialogue with Andy Van de Ven begins today and I urge you
to look into it. I am certain that both the content and form will be
immensely stimulating.

You are invited to participate in an Academy of Management online forum
on "Professional Science for a Professional School," facilitated by
Prof. Andrew Van de Ven, to be held at the MED Virtual Camp
(http://aom.pace.edu:8088/~VirtualCamp/ ), June 3 through 7.
Andy Van de Ven is the Vernon H. Heath Professor of Organizational
Innovation and Change at the Carlson School of Management, University
of
Minnesota, and served as President of the Academy of Management in
2000-2001 (for more information, please see his home page at
http://legacy.csom.umn.edu/WWWPages/Faculty/VanDeVen/ahvhome.htm )
In his Presidential Address at the 2001 Academy Meeting in Washington,
D.C., Andy stated that the Academy is a learning community of
practicing scholars: together, we can become something bigger than you
and I could
be by ourselves.
Now he demonstrates this point by volunteering to lead Academy members
in a week-long online discussion on scholarship in business schools,
and how we can cope with the opportunities and challenges of
"professional
research," which transcends the polarities between basic and applied
research. This is the topic of the first chapter in his forthcoming
book, "Professional Science" (Sage Publications Series in Foundations
for Organization Science). Using a baseball analogy, the chapter
presents a "diamond model" to represent the major processes of a
professional research project, and discusses what it takes to be
successful in running the four bases of problem formulation, theory
building, research design and problem solving.
This forum is the first in a series of online interactions sponsored by
the "Virtual Camp," an initiative of the Management Education and
Development Division, with the support of the Academy's Teaching and
Ethics Committees. The Virtual Camp is a year-round learning
community, dedicated to helping Academy members contribute to the
scholarship of
teaching by honing their skills as submitters, reviewers, session
chairs, discussants, facilitators and presenters. It is one of the
Academy's 2002 strategic initiatives and received an innovation award.
To participate in Andy's forum on Professional Science, just visit the
Virtual Camp at
http://aom.pace.edu:8088/~VirtualCamp/
Click on the button that says "New User" and fill in the blanks (name,
password, e-mail etc.) to create a profile. Then, click on the link
"Van de Ven on Professional Science" and download the chapter. You're
now ready to join us online at the Virtual Camp, throughout the week of
June 3-7, to interact with Andy and your colleagues from around the
world. Make this week a special moment in Academy history!
Warm regards,
Regina
