Most discussions of stakeholder theory typically begin with the
responsibilities of the firm towards its stakeholders. This focus was
reinforced by the traditional hub-and-spoke model of the firm and its
stakeholders that placed the firm at the very centre. However, recent
advances in stakeholder theory have begun to understand the firm and
its stakeholders as embedded in a network of relationships. With the
increased prominence of stakeholders that this conceptual shift
implies, attention has now turned to stakeholder responsibilities as
well as rights.
This special issue of "The Journal of Corporate Citizenship" represents
an attempt to foster greater thinking on stakeholder responsibility.
Through a collection of conceptual papers and four
practitioner-targeted case studies, the issue aims to make a
significant contribution to our understanding of such responsibility
and should go far in improving the practice of stakeholder engagement.
