>Dear Colleagues,
>
>We would like to cordially invite you to a Professional Development
>Workshop session,
>"From Totans to Dissidents: Leveraging Learning through Film" at the
>Denver AOM
>annual meeting. This PDW is sponsored by the Management Education and
>Development division.
>The workshop will explore the use of full-length film-specific teaching
>materials, allowing for the integrated, in-depth analysis of diverse,
>multiple concepts, in numerous management teaching areas (organizational
>behavior, leadership, teams, problem-solving skills, human resource
>management, change). Analysis at this level, for instance, can be
>incorporated into a class utilizing case-based teaching, to provide
>targeted, yet comprehensive, analytical experience prior to tackling a
>comprehensive written case, or to facilitate a team's conceptual
>understanding prior to turning the analytical lens on themselves in skills
>classes.
>Several faculty will demonstrate and discuss the use of detailed movie
>analysis assignments from a half-dozed courses. Development of extensive,
>intermediate-level teaching materials is a time-consuming burden for any
>one individual. Additionally, when utilizing film for comprehensive,
>writing-based class assignments or in lieu of exams, rather than solely
>for discussion, films need to be changed or rotated frequently,
>exacerbating the develpment burden. Thus, a packet of movie analysis
>assignment sheets, developed by us, from a wide range of management
>courses, will be distributed to all workshop participants.
>This packet includes both older and recent film selections (Malcolm X,
>Burning Season, Stand and Deliver, White Squall, Tucker, Apollo 13,
>Tuskegee Airman, Flight of the Phoenix, Lean on Me, Office Space,
>Efficiency Expert, Boiler Room, Remember the Titans, The Program, Men of
>Honor, Varsity Blues, among others....Participants are also asked to bring
>sample teaching materials utilizing film from their own classes, where
>possible, to share with others at the workshop.
>The PDW is scheduled on Saturday, August 10, 7 AM - 9 AM at
>Room A103 of the Convention Center in Denver.
>Co-Chairs: Amy Hietapelto, Sonia Goltz & Sharon Tyrell, Michigan
>Technological University
>If you have any questions please feel free to contact me... Looking
>forward to seeing you there!
