Charlie,
I recently sent a couple messages to the list, but haven't seen them
posted.
I'm wondering if perhaps I used a different e-mail account that didn't
correspond with my Academy membership, and if that's the reason they
weren't
posted. In any case, could you please look into this for me? One of
the
e-mails (see below) requests the assistance of list members in
contacting a
Canadian businessman and time is running out. Thanks much, Charlie.
Hope
you're well!
Best,
Larry

Subject: Request for Assistance in Contacting Norbert Reinhart
My students and I have been trying for the past month to locate Norbert
Reinhart, the Canadian businessman who voluntarily became a hostage to
Columbian rebels in order to secure the release of one of his formen
(see
http://www.csmonitor.com/durable/1999/01/15/p1s4.htm). We have included
Reinhart's name on our list of "100 Courageous Individuals" (see
http://www.pate.org/courage.doc), and he has subsequently been selected
as
one of the 8 finalists to be profiled in our book. However, to complete
the
profile, the students need to talk with Reinhart and, as yet, we haven't
been able to locate him. I would welcome any leads or assistance list
members can provide. We have tried all the obvious sources, including
Yahoo
People Finder, Telus Business Finder, Canada411, and the Yellowpages
People/Business finder for Canada, all to no avail. We have also tried
a
few non-obvious ways of reaching him, such as writing to journal editors
and
authors of articles written about Reinhart, as well as attempting to
contact
family members or people close to Reinhart mentioned in those articles.
One
of these news sources, Campus Times, is apparently no longer in
operation.
Curiously, the owner of Graystar Project Management Company tells us he
never heard of Rienhart or Terramundo Drilling, and the phone number
listed
for Blue Heron Drilling is a non-working number. In short, we have
followed
up on practically every lead we can think of, and I am hoping that list
members will be able to provide some assistance in reaching him. I have
provided a few additional links and my notes to students below, in the
event
that they might be helpful in sparking fresh ideas. Thanks much.

One site (http://www.albertareport.com/volume26/990125/story2.html) says
Reinhart was hired by Greystar Resources in Vancouver, and identifies
David
Rovig as "Graystar's Montana-based president" and Willy Spat as
"Graystar
corporate affairs manager." Even though Reinhart's contract with
Graystar
was cancelled (in November, 1998), maybe Rovig or Spat can get us access
to
Reinhart (fitting that "Spat" would argue about where the $170,000
ransom
money came from!). The site also mentions "Richard Andrews, with
Conquistador Mining based in St. Helena, California." Conquistador is
the
company that contracted with Reinhart for his company's drilling
operation
in Columbia. Maybe try to connect with Andrews.
Another site
(http://www.bible.org/docs/splife/evang/hostagefreed/hostagefreed.htm),
even
though it's zealously evangelical, gives lots of specific detail of
Leonard's capture that may be useful in contacting Reinhart. It
identifies
"Canadian Foreign Minister Lloyd Axworthy," so we might try contacting
him.
Better yet, it gives us Reinhart's wife's name, Casey, as well as those
of
their "three children; a son, Jesse, 18, and two young daughters, Robin,
6,
and Molly, 2." You can now expand your "People Search" to include
"Norbert
and Casey Reinhart."
Another site
http://www.cca-alberta.com/eventsPrevious_99_2.html shows
that he was on a panel discussion with: (1) K.T. Kereluk - Director of
Security, TransCanada Pipelines, (2) Julio Arboleda - Lawyer, Howard
Mackie,
and (3) Jim Wright - Moderator. Any of these people might know how to
reach
him. You could attempt to access them by looking up their companies.
If
one avenue doesn't pan out, then look for another one. This site also
says,
"For more information, please contact: Sharon Penny-Knowles, SLP
Communications, Telephone: 403-202-2295," so we might start with her and
let
her know we are attempting to reach Reinhart.
http://timelines.ws/days/06_24.HTML "1998 Jun 24, In Colombia rebels
seized
Ed Leonard of the Terramundo Drilling Co. of Canada. They asked for a
ransom
of $2 million from the Grey Star Resources Co., which had hired
Terramundo
for exploratory work. (SFC, 11/7/98, p.C1)" cited from
http://timelines.ws/
http://www.campustimes.com/issue16/faces.html "The owner of Terramundo
Drilling Inc. made headlines in November when he made a trade with
Columbian
rebels: Reinhart took a kidnapped employee's place and disappeared into
the
jungle with the masked men. Those of us sitting on the crack Campus
Times
Obituary Committee had been busy writing Reinhart's tribute when the
news
came that he had been freed."
