    Dear MG-ED-DV-ers,

I would like to know of any experiences/ recommendations on web-based teaching
platforms.  I have used Blackboard in the past and have "some" access to the
Lotus Notes system as well.  I think some recent messages dealt with WebCT (?)
but it seems that there are many others available (one of my textbook providers
offers another platform with adoption of their book -obviously).

If somebody has used multiple platforms, would you kindly send me a brief
message about your experiences?  I would also appreciate contact info (in
particular, Internet address for the service).  I will summarize for the list a
few weeks after I stop receiving messages on this issue.  Thanks in advance!

    Miguel

I would suggest you start by articulating your objectives for using a
web-based platform- a step most faculty overlook

    Well said Chuck!

Almost all web-based platforms now require the user to be online the full
time and to have a connectivity speed that tolerates heavy use of graphics.

When we did our analysis prior to selecting our new platform (Our old one
went out of business), the fact that we have rural students with slow
dialups on single phone lines was factored into our choice. We selected a
framework that is oriented to offline work. Users go online to
    send/receive, but work offline.

I'm surprised Katz hasn't made this analysis and has a standard delivery
system--be careful about using a different platform from your colleagues
since students may have to adapt to new interfaces

    Miguel:

You may find this study on Technology and Student Success of interest.
One of the parameters measured is the use of learning platforms. WebCT
has a dominant share in Canada. This is partially accounted for by the
$50 million investment in WebCT made by the folks who bring us Banner as
the Enterprise Resource Planning software of choice for post secondary
institutions in North America and the ability to integrate the two
    systems.

    RE: Interest in E-Learning

While researching current "best practices" in e-learning and distance
education, I discovered this link to "2002 Guide to e-Learning Vendors"
published by University Business. According to the author, "The directory
lists more than 100 companies providing e-learning services...those firms
that design courseware, produce software, and provide marketing, delivery,
and support services." Some of you may find it worthwhile.

  • 7.  Web-based teaching platforms

    Posted 02-07-2003 15:34
    Dear MG-ED-DV-ers,

Thank you for sending me your tips and comments about web-based teaching
platforms last month.  I just wanted to acknowledge and share the responses I
compiled, for the benefit of all interested:

Ed Leach (from Dalhousie, Canada, I believe) shared the following site:

    http://www.mcgrawhill.ca/highereducation/administrators/research.php

Pauline Assenza (from Woodbury, CT) sent the following link to the "2002 Guide
    to e-Learning Vendors:"

    http://www.universitybusiness.com/story.asp?txtFilename=features/eLearn.htm

I also received a couple of excellent papers by J.B. Arbaugh <arbaugh@uwosh.edu>
and a truly neat tutorial by Charles <Morrissey cmorris@pepperdine.edu>.  (I
believe that they, as authors, should be contacted directly by interested
    colleagues.)

I truly appreciate your help, I haven't been able to follow up an online
discussion on this topic, but I am very short on time these days (I just
relocated to Monterrey, Mexico, after 5+ years at the Katz school in
Pittsburgh).  Hope you have a great weekend!

    Miguel
