Hello –

We're currently in the process of evaluating the ethics content in our undergraduate curriculum here at Indiana University. I'm writing to ask for opinions on what you would consider the "must study" ethical issues specific to Management. If you'll reply to me individually with your thoughts (cwiethof@indiana.edu), I'll be glad to compile results and post them to the list. If there are any additional resources you suggest I consult, I'd also appreciate knowing about those.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Well Carolyn, I certainly recommend Chapter 3 of my OB textbook noted below. One item of note is the eExercise that let's student assess their ethics reactions to different scenarios. I attach a copy for your review.

    Hello -

We're currently in the process of evaluating the ethics content in our
undergraduate curriculum here at Indiana University. I'm writing to ask
for opinions on what you would consider the "must study" ethical issues
specific to Management. If you'll reply to me individually with your
thoughts (cwiethof@indiana.edu), I'll be glad to compile results and
post them to the list. If there are any additional resources you
suggest I consult, I'd also appreciate knowing about those.

Thanks in advance for your help.

My opinion is that if people haven't the habits of behaving ethically by the time they are at university, you're too late.

    Teach them business law.

The issue is discussed in the March 2006 "AoM International Management Division Newsletter", p. 12++

    Romie:

I think your Buckley quote under your signature says it all. I agree we can't teach people how to be ethical, but we can make them aware of the issues regarding morality, law, and just plain, what is right. They will then have to judge each event on its own merits. My job is to make them aware of these situational stimuli, and their job is to deal with them as they see fit.

As many have said, legal correctness is not necessarily equal to moral correctness. Teaching only the law removes the "human" element of issues which is often more important that a strict legal interpretation of those issues.
