My personal and professional opinion only:
I was in industry, and then in academia, and later switched back to
industry. I earned my PhD while pursuing a career in industry.(it was hard
and long)
The choices will depend upon what your student wants to do. However, his age
may be a barrier (though there are laws in USA about age discrimination) but
there is always a silent/hidden agenda of the hiring managers. After the age
of 40, it becomes tough.
Yet, if he has marketable skills, and good expreirnece he has opportunties
such as:
- government
- consulting companies
- industry
- private sector research firms
- start his own consulting or busines
- franchising
- overseas/foriegn employment
- interim manager, contract employee for special assignments.
- teach at community colleges or e-university, virtual university
- corporate universties
- business conference centers / resorts.
I hope this may be of some help to you and him. Either search the
opportunites thru the net with several job boards, corporate web sites or
contact a good specialty head-hunter (management recruiter).
Best Regards

Subject: Career Opportunities
Dear All, As a dyed in the wool academic, I basically prepare students to
be researchers. However, one of my Ph.D. students (in his mid-40s) wants
to know about other career opportunities/paths. Many of you have chosen
paths other than being at a research university. I would appreciate
feedback, that I can pass on, regarding non-university careers, and how one
pursues them.
Thanks, Kim Boal
