CALL FOR PAPERS: Special Issue
Human Resource Management Journal
Human Resource Management and Leadership Lessons from the Military
Co-editors: Claudia J. Ferrante, United States Air Force Academy
Cynthia S. Cycyota, United States Air Force Academy
Military settings have a long history of contribution to human resource
management (HRM) and HR leadership (HRL) theory and practice. This special
issue of HRMJ seeks to further that contribution. The theme of the special
issue is human resource management and leadership in military settings and
its implications for general HR theory and the practice. Papers can be
theory-focused, research-focused empirical articles, reviews of relevant
research, or practitioner-focused research articles (e.g., case studies).
However, all papers must both: 1) relate to HR management or leadership
practice, research, or teaching in a military setting (including military
academies), and 2) discuss the papers implications for general HR theory or
the practice of HRM in non-military organizations.
For this special issue of HRMJ we solicit articles that address issues such
as the following:
Leadership (e.g., key competencies, the development of leaders, the
meaning of HR leadership from a military perspective).
Recruitment and selection.
Team development, operation, and effectiveness.
Change management in the military.
The measurement of HR effectiveness, or HR metrics.
How military organizations identify, create, and/or maintain their desired
culture(s).
Ethical behavior.
Legal compliance.
Career management (e.g., the military career development continuum,
managing dual careers).
Policies and practices addressing work-family concerns.
Approaches to managing diversity and gender.
Potential conflicts between military HR systems and command structure.
Effective compensation and benefit practices.
Teaching at the military academies (e.g., lessons for corporate
universities or, more generally, learning in non-military organizations).
This foregoing list is not intended to be exhaustive. We also solicit
articles providing a historical overview of the militarys involvement in
HRM, or addressing issues related to the generalizability of research and
HRM practice from military settings to non-military settings (What
constraints and/or advantages exist for HRM in a military setting? What are
the primary similarities/differences of HRM systems in military versus
civilian settings? Are there differences in perspective regarding military
HRM across countries?). In addition, we encourage authors to contribute
other ideas consistent with the special issues general theme.
