Dear MED folks wrapping up your MED Submissions for the August Meetings

As most or all of you know, many folks have had trouble getting their
submission registration numbers from the electronic submission system.

    EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The following message basically says: please do not let that difficulty get
in your way; get the submission in the mail; and we'll work it out.

APOLOGIES, THANKS, AND A FEW DETAILS
We are all sorry about the delays and frustrations many of you have
experienced and greatly appreciate the patience and good humor you have
exhibited. Thanks for your generosity of spirit in handling this situation.

The deadline for electronic registration through the website has been
extended to Monday, JANUARY 11, 7 pm, and the deadline for receipt of
papers na s symposium proposals has been extended to Tuesdays night,
    JANUARY 12.

Let me repeat what I said above as the bottom line recommendation: Please
do not let any problems with the electronic submission registration process
prevent you from sending in your submission. If you can get your papers
and proposals for MED into the mail to us in time for Tuesday arrival, we
will find some way to handle the other details.

Naturally, if you can obtain the electronic registration number and print
out the cover sheet to be included with your submission, that will be great
and will be much easier on all of us.

But if you cannot do so, please send in the submission with all the cover
sheet material except that elusive registration number. We will, of
course, process all submissions we receive.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION THAT MAY HELP YOU IN THE ELECTRONIC SUBMISSION
    REGISTRATION PROCESS
I am including below some additional information provided by Andy van de
Ven, Alan Eisner, and others that may enable you to navigate the electronic
submission registration system over the weekend or on Monday. Please call
if I can be of any help (212-636-6178).

EXCERPTS (with some editing) FROM MESSAGES I HAVE RECEIVED ON THIS TOPIC:

If you are having difficulties in submitting your paper
electronically on the AOM Pace Web page, the following help
procedures from Alan Eisner and Damon Hurd may address your problem.

If the answers to Frequently Asked Questions (given below) do not solve your
problem, please e-mail your technical question or problem to
    webmaster@aom.pace.edu

If you have a nontechnical question about your submission, please
contact me, Jim Stoner, for MED, or the appropriate program chair of the
division to which you are submitting your paper. The name, address, and
    phone number of your selected
division program chair is listed in the Call for Papers. Mine appears in
my signature at the end of this message.

I hope this will solve your problem. Please let me know if you get
stuck. Thanks very much for preparing your proposal for the Chicago
    '99 Academy of Management Conference.

    Common Errors and Solutions

An error has occurred expanding the template. Line: 20 Column: 1 SQL
State 07006 [Sybase][ODBC Driver]: cannot convert null to a
    decimal(30,6)

This error is caused either by an older web browser or the increased
traffic on the web site during this final submission week. Try using a
recent web browser, preferably Netscape 4 or better, and a fast
connection. You can download a recent version of the Netscape browser
    from the following URL: http://home.netscape.com/download/index.html

    Warning: undefined variable
    document."value"."naffiliation"[naffiliation] near line 17 Warning:
    undefined variable
    document."value"."submissionid"[submissionid] near line 46 Warning:
undefined variable document."value"."page"[page] near line 47

OR Any other error regarding affiliations.

This error indicates that your form is overloaded. This error commonly
occurs in Microsoft's Internet Explorer and older versions of
Netscape. Either submit using a recent version of Netscape or you'll
need to shorten the character length of your abstract as to not
    overload the page.

These are the answers to these problems. If you email, you will be
referred to this page for errors of this nature. For all OTHER errors,
email AoM Webmaster for a response within 8 -24 hours. >

PHONE ANSWERING MESSAGE AT AOM PACE HEADQUARTERS JAN. 9-10, 1999

Thank you for calling the Academy of Management.

If you are calling about electronic submission of papers for the
annual meeting, thank you for your interest. Please listen
    carefully to the following instructions:

Due to computer down time this week, the deadline for electronic
submissions has been extended to 7pm Eastern Standard Time on
Monday, January 11. The deadline for receipt of the printed
submission going directly to the division or interest group
program chair is Tuesday, January 12.

As of the recording of this announcement, the electronic
submission program is operational. If the system goes down, it
will be rebooted shortly. If you are unable to submit
electronically due to some technical difficulty, mail a hard copy
submission directly to the division or interest group chair.
Submissions received by mail by the new deadline will be
    considered.

If you are mailing a hard copy of your paper or symposium proposal
without electronic submission, you must still follow the
submission guidelines in the Call for Papers as closely as
possible. A title page containing all the requested information
must be submitted, although it will not have an electronic
    submission number.

We apologize for any technical difficulties you may be having.
If you need further help, please call our Program Chair Andy Van
de Ven or his associate Kelley Hinze at the University of
Minnesota at 612-624-1864. They will be in the office or checking
voice mail messages regularly on Saturday and Sunday.

Thank you very much for your interest in submitting and your
patience as we experienced technical overload this past week.

If you need assistance on matters other than submissions, please
call back on Monday. Thank you.

    Nancy Urbanowicz

There, that is the end of the various messages that may be helpful.

Good luck, and I'll be looking in my mailbox Tuesday.

My favorite quote for January comes, I believe, from Mahatma Gandhi.
(However, I may not have it precisely correct or may have mis-attributed
it; so, I'd be delighted to make any appropriate corrections):

"To believe that what has never been done can never be done is to deny the
    fundamental dignity of mankind."
