We are pleased to announce that Cornesky & Associates recently received
funding to conduct on-site Total Quality Management (TQM) / Continuous
Quality Improvement (CQI) workshops for educational institutions. With our
consulting fee being covered, we can offer workshops at your institution for
travel expenses and the price of the workshop materials. The travel expenses
are from Greenville, South Carolina. The workshop materials range from $5 to
$30 per participant. The workshops are limited to between 10 to 20
participants. If you are interested in bringing any of these professional
development opportunities to your institution, please contact us before
August 15, 2003. Your President / CEO must submit a one page letter proposal
that should:
1. Describe your institution and the student population served
2. Identify the workshop or workshops and the dates requested
3. Indicate how the workshop(s) will benefit your institution
4. Indicate the number of participants per workshop.
Email proposals are acceptable. Selections will be made on August 16, 2003.
All workshops must be completed before December 31, 2003.
The 1.5-day, in-depth workshops that have been approved are either classroom
oriented or curriculum oriented, or institutional oriented. They are
described below.
I. Classroom Oriented
Turning CQI Into Classroom Practice: A Collaborative Approach
This workshop introduces faculty to the "systems" approach where the
classroom is examined from the perspectives of four systems: 1)
thought-leader, 2) learning, 3) continuous improvement, and 4) reward. The
workshop also introduces 15 CQI tools and techniques for effective teaching
and assessment. This workshop will help thought-leaders to do the following
in their classroom:
o Increase teamwork and collaborative learning
o Assess teaching and learning effectiveness
o Increase student motivation
o Improve academic performance
o Increase pride in workmanship
o Reduce drop-out rates
o Identify root causes of classroom problems
o Organize issues and develop specific actions
We have been approved for a total of 80 participants. The workshop materials
are $20 per participant. Each workshop is limited to 20 participants.
II. Curriculum Oriented
How to Use Quality Function Deployment to Either Build a Curriculum that
Meets the Needs of Your Customers or to Assess the Effectiveness of Your
Curriculum
This workshop is intended to provide faculty with a flexible but disciplined
planning and implementation procedure in which the customer's wants and
needs are deployed throughout the curriculum of the academic major. The
procedure is known as Quality Function Deployment (QFD). It provides a
supporting system for making sure that customers' wants and needs are sought
after and heard and then incorporated into the processes and systems of the
department courses. This procedure is also very effective in assessing
critically your present curriculum.
Specifically the QFD techniques will help you measure the perceived: 1)
importance of each competency for success in the workplace, 2) level of
mastery that should be required for each competency, 3) effectiveness each
course addresses the terminal competencies not only in their specific
cluster, but also throughout the curriculum, 4) relative importance of each
course in the curriculum, and 5) number of intense learning experiences
available for the students to master each competency at the designated
mastery level. With these data you will be able to analyze the strengths of
your curriculum and your modules (syllabi), including those that might
require modification to address and assess the expected outcomes more fully.
We have been approved for a total of 40 participants. The workshop materials
are $5 per participant. Each workshop is limited to 20 participants. Each
participant must have a computer with MS Word and MS Excel programs.
III. Institutional Oriented
Turning Continuous Quality Improvement Into Institutional Practice: The
Tools and Techniques.
This workshop is for administrators and faculty. It describes a cooperative
model, which shows how management and faculty can work together to define
the quality problems, to establish quality improvement teams, and to take
steps to conduct an improvement study. It elaborates on the commonalties in
the approaches and principles to continuous quality improvement then
presents versions of self-assessment quality profile index tools based on
the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Criteria. Eight CQI tools and
techniques are used.
We have been approved for one workshop with a total of 10 participants. The
workshop materials are $30 per participant.
