  • 1.  AOM SEATTLE PDW: HRD in the Arab World

MANAGEMENT DEVELOPMENT IN THE ARAB WORLD (session 38)
A workshop at the AOM Seattle meeting
Friday, August 1, 2003, Sheraton Seattle Hotel & Towers: Room 426
Presenter: David Weir, Ceram Sophia Antipolis

The discourse of HRD is inextricably tied into assumptions about
"development" and "management" that are derived from a largely western
paradigm of management and business. But within the Arab Middle East these
assumptions are at best irrelevant and misleading.
In this workshop we explore what it is like to manage and be managed in the
Arab world, avoiding the treacherous discourse of "traditionalism" and
    "fundamentalism".
David Weir has based the workshop on the results of research undertaken by
himself and Arab colleagues since the 1970s .

Attached please find a brochure on some excellent
negotiation simulations. They were written by
Maureen Maguire Lewis, formerly with the Duke CIBER
and now working on her own as a casewriter. Oded Shenkar
and I (at OSU) have underwritten the preparation of the Olin Life
scenario, and I can enthusiastically recommend it to you.
The Frost in France and Annamay in Mexico are also
    excellent materials.

Please consult the Cultures Crossing website for more
information, and contact me if I can answer questions about
    Olin Life.
