Dear colleagues
Please allow me to draw your attention to a PDW jointly
sponsored by RM and MED divisions of the Academy of
Management:
Teaching Research Methods to Undergraduate Management
Students: Problems, Issues, Prospects
Scheduled: Friday, Aug 1 2003 6:00PM - 8:00PM at Sheraton
Seattle Hotel & Towers in Douglas Room
Independent and group research projects form an integral
part of programs offered by many undergraduate business
providers. Despite this provision, our search of the
literature reveals that there is little or no research
available on research training programs in undergraduate
business education. There are a limited number of studies
of undergraduate dissertation and project work. One
potential fruitful literature is that referring to
undergraduate research methodology courses in sociology
and psychology. However, the application of this literature
is likely to be limited by disciplinary, geographical, or
temporal constraints. In the absence of empirical research,
scholars must turn to sharing their experience of practical
scholarship in this area, and to exchanging models of best
practice as to learning, teaching, resourcing and
assessment strategies. We therefore propose a PDW workshop
in which teachers of research methods, supervisors of
undergraduate research projects, and others can meet to
discuss questions of pressing concern, which might include
but need not be limited to: 1. What skills (practical,
cognitive, affective) and areas of knowledge should
undergraduate research methods programs and undergraduate
research projects seek to develop? 2. What curricula,
materials and learning processes are required to deliver
these outcomes? 3. What best practices are apparent in
research projects and methods programs delivered in
business and management schools?
Although the PDW specifically concerns undergraduate
business research, we hope that it will be useful for those
teaching research methods to other audiences.
A web resource we have developed that might be useful for
those interested in the workshop is:
